Manaus
“What’s it like?
Wow, where do I even start?
Living in Manaus is like being in two worlds at the same time. On one hand, we are a massive, bustling metropolis of over 2 million people and a major industrial hub. On the other hand, we are completely wrapped by the Amazon Rainforest, which shapes our entire way of life.
First off, you have to know that it is hot and humid—always! We live right near the equator, so the sun doesn’t play around, but you get used to the tropical rhythm. Because of the weather, our city is deeply connected to water. We have beautiful freshwater beaches like Ponta Negra, and right on our doorstep is the Encounter of the Waters, where the dark Rio Negro and the muddy Solimões River flow side by side for miles without mixing. It’s a breathtaking visual spectacle.
Architecturally, Manaus has a fascinating history. Back in the late 19th century, the city became incredibly wealthy during the rubber boom. People used to call it the “Paris of the Tropics”. Because of that era, we have the magnificent Teatro Amazonas right in the city center—a stunning European-style opera house with a pink and gold dome made of Vatican tiles. It stands out beautifully against the urban landscape.
But my favorite part about living here is definitely the food and culture. Our cuisine is unlike anything else in Brazil because it’s heavily influenced by our indigenous roots. We eat incredible regional fish like tambaqui and pirarucu, and you can’t leave without trying tacacá—a hot, sour soup served in a gourd that literally tingles your tongue.
It can be a bit chaotic at times, and the traffic gets heavy, but the warmth of the people match the weather. It’s a proud, vibrant, and uniquely tropical place to call home!”
